Learn to read Hiragana using our extensive set of exercises (a total of 300 exercises).

Answers to reading exercises are represented with romaji (Japanese transcribed as Roman characters) as well as with Japanese audio.

Hiragana Study uses partial substitution as an effective method of teaching the reading of Hiragana characters.

New characters are introduced gradually and intermixed with romaji (Roman characters), which makes it easy to learn hiragana.

For example, at the beginning, when you don’t know any hiragana characters and you’re learning the あ character (which reads ‘a’ in romaji), whole Japanese words in the exercises are written in romaji with only the あ character written in hiragana: あiso (aiso), あimai (aimai), あete (ate), etc.

As you make progress learning hiragana, more and more romaji is substituted for hiragana.

For example, when you’re learning the に character (which reads ’ni’), you’ve already learned many other hiragana characters, so not only the に character, but also all the others that you’ve learned are used instead of romaji: そreに (soreni), しnにn (shinnin), そくzaに (sokuzani), etc.

This makes learning hiragana much more effective than many other methods.
